Utopia of Genesis by Nensi Bogdani

By (author): Nensi Bogdani

Title: Utopia of Genesis

Subtitle: Photographs from Reenactments of Biblical Scenes

In searching for God, the facets of human nature which cause ambition, political conflict, and greed, are all eliminated - thus creating a kind of Utopia.
This photographic book delves you into these utopic settings encountered in some northern villages of Albania – Hajmel, Nënshat, Dheu i Lehtë, Vau i Dejës – where a special importance is given to the religious rituals related with Christianity and religion.
Re-enactments of ancient rituals such as the "Reenactment of Betlehem" and the "Suffering of Christ" take place regularly every year in these villages, organized by the Capuchin friars and Church members.
While gathering thousands of believers, the whole scenes present the viewer with the acts of Dreaming, Imagination, Faith and Believing, somehow related to God and Utopia.
In the primitive and medieval times these rituals were performed to worship God, whereas nowadays they are used as a means to bring people together and spread a message of Hope.
These rituals bring back distant times, enacting a human society where faith, care and hospitality are seen as the solid caterpillars from the genesis of the world up to current times, in face of the reality's limitations.
They keep an eye to the ideal, but still engage with the mundane struggles and sacrifices of humanity nowadays.
