Painting after Painting by Lino Lago
By (author): Lino Lago
Title: Painting after Painting
Subtitle: Fake Abstract and Crash paintings series
Blurb/Shorttext:
The Spanish painter Lino Lago explores the history of painting from classical figurative art to concept art and minimalism. In his “Fake Abstract” series he combines portraits by old masters with gestural marks or stripes and mostly monochrome colored canvases. The figurative motive is simultaneously hidden and revealed underneath planes of bright or pastel color. It makes us viewers curious - we want to see more of the person behind the layers of colors, but on the other hand we enjoy the beauty of these colors and the sweeping gestures of the sections. Lago refers to the development of painting through several centuries and creates a dialogue between old masterpieces and contemporary art. He builds a bridge of high aesthetic through the history of painting and adds a new aspect to the tradition of portrait.
