Johnny Welch's work brings together several long-running photographic series. The book combines nude and semi-nude portraits of women from Bizarre - an ongoing project inspired by the original fetish magazine - with cross motifs photographed in cemeteries and landscapes gathered from an extensive travel diary dating back to 2012. Through carefully constructed situations, Welch encourages his subjects to step beyond their everyday identities and embody archetypal characters, creating images that explore symbolic and psychological states. The cross motifs are drawn primarily from cemeteries in Germany, as well as sites of personal significance such as Père Lachaise in Paris and Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. Working exclusively with analogue film and hand-printing through the silver gelatin process, Welch treats his negatives as part of a growing archive, producing only a small number of prints. The resulting photographs are selected for their strong aura and haunting presence, reflecting an intimate connection to both the subject and the physical process of image-making.
