Blurb/Shorttext:
Aspects of Mercury is a journey to experience, understand, and grasp the complexity and richness of Weisstub's work. This exploration stems from a deep blend of content drawn from the unconscious and a broad, fearless, and playful imagination that reveals the many facets of our lives—personal and intimate, collective and social, physical, and spiritual.
In her pencil sketches, Weisstub unveils complex emotions of vulnerability, sadness, and loneliness. She transforms mundane situations by creating altered realities that evoke discomfort and provoke new, distinct emotional experiences. Through vibrant, childlike marker drawings rendered in a slightly naive style, she explores spaces in her apartment, remnants of food, and house pets from fresh, challenging perspectives, at times confronting the viewer with extreme violence and death.
The journey continues with acrylic strokes layered over vintage anatomical medical illustrations, transforming them into living entities. Another aspect of her work emerges through the combination of different Ukiyo-e prints, creating new meanings that are sometimes poetic and delicate, sometimes erotic, and occasionally critical.
Her bold works—collages of photographs, some from old collections and some of her own—push the boundaries of sexuality, revealing playfulness, pleasure, and humor. Through interactive works, video art, and classic animation, she invites thoughtful examination and mirth.
Finally, Maayan opens a window to an entirely different world, urging us to stop, breathe, linger, and allow ourselves to experience creation, life, pain, and death. Weisstub's sculptures are simultaneously complex and delicate, leaving us from the encounter with our imagination stretched and a resonance of content that echoes from the depths of our being.
