Abstract Expressionism emerged as a distinct art movement in the United States in the years immediately following World War II, gaining mainstream acceptance in the 1950’s. Seen as the first distinctly American art movement to achieve international recognition and influence, Abstract Expressionism led to the development of other diverse movements throughout the second half of the 20th century and continues to exert influence on contemporary painters and sculptors today.
Mel Tudisco’s emphasis on intuitive creation, and commitment to painting in pure abstraction with oil on canvas or metal are a testament to the influence key figures of Abstract Expressionism—Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, and Helen Frankenhaler—have had on her work. Her large-scale paintings are rich and full of depth.
Informed by her attentiveness to the world around her, Tudisco’s work frequently involves painting on metal, and building up canvas to create dimension. She is firmly committed to the fluidity of painting with oils. What results can best be described as concept through texture.
Tudisco adds: "My paintings are borne from my intuitive grasp of abstraction,
coupled with my natural abilities, mixing color and my skill as a painter.”
With a vocabulary of personal marks, and a palette of colors that are individual to her work, Tudisco’s imagery is unique. Each painting, the eloquent coupling of tactile experience with the spontaneous gestures of expression.
