Title: Passing by

Subtitle: A photographic diary of a tatooer, traveling through East Africa. In memory of Sumy Sadurni

Blurb/Shorttext:

While in between one of his mission shifts in 2018 I met Sumy in Kampala - a photojournalist, who's work is Internationally renowned and published by The New York Times, the Financial Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, El País and Le Monde.
Us two shared appreciation for tattooing, which eventually led to me tattooing her and Sumi sending me pictures she took of traditional scarifications of South Sudan. At that time I’ve already seen a few of traditionally made tattoos and scarifications myself, but never really managed to get pictures. One thing led to another and now I’m here, years later.
This book is an attempt to present a study of the East African region's body modification tradition in the form of a travel diary. I've always loved listening to stories. Stories are a really big part of tattooing, stories make history. However, often times delivery of the story is the key. As a student I really liked history class. Reading history textbooks can be quite boring - there is not much personality, just plain facts, sometimes not even facts even. Therefore I didn’t want to make just another textbook, but rather to present a study in a very personal form, a form of a diary of my travels through Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia.
Hereby I want to share with you some things me and Sumy found and managed to document. These photographs were taken in between 2019-2023, during multiple trips.
