In light of the recent resurgence of antisemitism, I felt compelled to remind the world that it has faced hate like this before. Humanity has endured such darkness, and through the courage, sacrifice, and kindness of others, many survived to share their stories. These survivors stand as living testaments, urging us never to forget that empathy and action are often the difference between life and oblivion.
The challenge lay in amplifying these stories to reach as wide an audience as possible. Thus, The Borrowed Spotlight was born. This initiative paired celebrities and notable individuals from diverse industries with survivors not just to spread the message but to engage directly — listening, questioning, and sharing in these profound experiences. I am endlessly grateful to every survivor and every guest who graciously lent their spotlight to this cause.
Throughout this journey, I’ve photographed conversations where unimaginable horrors were recounted. Yet, more often than not, these stories concluded with triumphant smiles — reminders that every day since has been a gift, never taken for granted. My daily worries seem minuscule and I am often humbled, inspiring me to strive for greater compassion.
It is my hope that this project inspires you to be the difference someone would need in the face of hate. May you recognize that behind even the brightest smile might lie a history of profound pain, and that positivity and hope are powerful forces capable of filling even the darkest rooms.
