Avant le chat, Thoma Vuille était graffeur : à la fin des années 1980, il taguait déjà son blaze, TOMA, sur les murs d’Orléans. À partir de 1993, il suivit dans cette même ville une formation à l’école des Beaux-Arts. Grâce à une intervention dans une classe en 1997, il trouvera l’inspiration qui guidera presque toutes ses créations futures : le dessin d’une des élèves représentant un chat vert au large sourire. Le reste appartient à l’histoire… Après avoir commencé à peindre dans les rues d’Orléans des chats de toutes les couleurs, il exportera son personnage – qui deviendra finalement jaune – sur les murs et les toits d’autres villes et rencontrera un certain succès jusqu’au fameux film de Chris Marker Chats perchés (2004) qui le propulsera sur la scène mondiale. M. Chat révèlera son identité civile quelques années plus tard, en 2007, suite à une arrestation ; l’artiste a toujours rencontré quelques démêlés avec la justice suite à ses actes de « vandalisme », ce qui se traduira par deux procès, un en 2014 et un en 2016. Bien qu’aujourd’hui son travail soit reconnu et exposé en musée et en galerie, beaucoup l’ont perçu comme étant une dégradation de biens publics. Mais Thoma Vuille peint sur les murs, motivé par une volonté d’embellir la ville, le quotidien des passants. Il veut faire du street-art un art consacré, bien qu’il en déplore certains aspects, comme notamment son caractère éphémère qu’il dépasse en produisant des toiles.

Chat, iconic character. This monograph traces back the street-artist’s journey from his birth in 1977 – and even before, by mentioning historical events influencing him, as the World War II, often mentioned by his grandparents – until 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally a graffiti artist, Thoma Vuille tagged on Orléans’s walls TOMA in the late 1980s before starting studying at the École des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans in 1993. In 1997, while intervening in a class, he found what would deeply influence his work: a little girl’s drawing of a green grinning cat. The rest is history… After starting to paint multicoloured cats in the streets of Orléans, he would paint his character – who would ultimately become yellow – on the walls and roofs of other cities meeting a certain success until Chris Marker’s infamous film The Case of the Grinning Cat, making him world famous. M. Chat’s identity went public several years later, in 2007, after he was arrested – the artist has always had trouble with justice because of his acts of “vandalism” which would lead to two trials, one in 2014 and one in 2016. Many people used to see M. Chat’s works as a degradation of public goods, but they are now seen as art and exhibited in museums and galleries. But Thoma Vuille paints on walls because he wants to embellish the city and the daily life of the passers-by. He wants street-art to become a consecrated art event if he dislikes some of its aspects like ephemerality for instance, which he still manages to avoid by painting on canvas.
