Blurb:

Human meaning-making is an ancient practice.  Cultivating a relationship with the ancestors was woven into daily life.  Sustenance meant more than animal, vegetable and mineral.  A connection to the past was as invaluable as food.  The rituals that mark the passage of human life were the very threads of our cultural fabric.
The core topic that motivates my work is an animist belief in our interconnection with the living world.  My interest in animism is reflected in my figurative work  through the content and the brush work, my way of suggesting movement. The content shows moments of private ritual, often set in abstracted nature. The vibrant colors are also a symbolic language that I use to depict the inner world.
In my still lifes, I use timeless symbols such as rocks, stones, eggs, and tools, to evoke an ancient understanding that nothing in this world is inert and if we look steadily enough narratives reveal themselves.  Years ago, I believed that I painted what is missing.   As it turns out, I am doing that still.
