THE WOMAN I AM is a deeply personal photographic journey by German-born, France-based artist Louise Reinke, exploring identity, womanhood, and belonging. The project began from a place of pause when the constant rhythm of city life left her searching for stillness and self-recognition. With her mother’s analog camera in hand, Reinke embarked alone to Brazil, a country she had never visited yet felt emotionally tethered to through years her creative work with L’Officiel Brasil.
Her aim was not to document others, but to find herself reflected in the lives of women she encountered from Salvador to São Paulo, from coastal villages to the heart of carnival. Through these quiet yet emotionally charged exchanges, she discovered that the women she sought were mirrors for her own story. Each meeting, gesture, and gaze became part of a collective portrait of femininity, tender, resilient, and unguarded. A recurring theme in her work is the human figure, emotional nuance, and exploring vulnerability or moments of candid expression rather than purely glossy imagery. She is interested in the dialogue of image as “a copy of reality” that can “confront the viewer” suggests a deeper ambition in her work beyond mere visuals.
The resulting photographs capture a vivid interplay of intimacy and observation: women in prayer, children at play, an artist painting, remnants of daily rituals, even the fragile remains of a drowned sea turtle. The imagery weaves together joy and melancholy, sensuality and solitude, offering a visual meditation on universal love and human connection.
Rendered in soft, dreamlike tones, THE WOMAN I AM moves fluidly between documentary and reverie. It is not only a travelogue but a map of emotional landscapes, a reflection of how, by venturing into the unknown, one can begin to see oneself clearly. The book invites readers to experience vulnerability as strength and photography as both testimony and self-portrait.
