Title: JAZZ PEOPLE | FIGHTERS

Subtitle: Portraits of jazz and boxing amid the twin cities of art—Paris and New York

Blurb:

This fine art monograph brings together two of Thorsten Roth’s most defining portrait series: JAZZ PEOPLE and FIGHTERS. Created across two decades in two cultural capitals—Paris and New York—these works explore the tension between refinement and raw energy, tradition and transformation—through two American-born art forms that continue to resonate far beyond their origins.

JAZZ PEOPLE, now part of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s permanent collection, features black-and-white portraits of important American jazz musicians captured in Paris during the 1990s. In a city known for its elegance and cultural depth, Roth portrays jazz not as rebellion, but as reverence—a timeless language captured through intimate portraits, photographed in evocative locations and shaped by presence, soul, and mastery.

FIGHTERS, begun in 2005 at Brooklyn’s iconic Gleason’s Gym, reflects New York’s restless, propulsive energy. Roth’s portraits—of champions, contenders, and unknown amateurs—represent the spirit of the city itself: urgent, ambitious, and alive with transformation. Each subject carries the quiet intensity of someone who confronts their limits and pushes beyond them.

Paris absorbs and refines. New York drives and reinvents. In Roth’s vision, the two cities speak to one another—jazz and boxing becoming parallel forms of rhythm, grace, spirit, and endurance—driven by a personal will to achieve victory and success.
