Don Eddy is a contemporary representational painter, who gained recognition in American art around 1970 along with a group of artists that critics and dealers identified as Photorealists or Hyperrealists, due to the work’s high degree of verisimilitude and use of photography as source material. He received his first widespread recognition through exhibitions such as “Sharp-Focus Realism” (Sidney Janis Gallery) and Documenta 5 (1972), among other groundbreaking shows on realism. In the ’70s Eddy painted the California urban landscape, focusing on cars, reflections on cars, bumpers, headlights. The artist moved quickly from cars to storefronts to shelves filled with glassware and toys. By the late 1980s, Eddy’s paintings explored the mystery of being, he began to use a multi-panel approach in his work to mirror life experiences: polyptychs, triptychs, altarpieces; vehicles for poetic juxtapositions. In his multi-panel works meaning does not reside “in” the image, it is generated between and amongst images. It is from this point in time, the beginning of the multi-panel approach that the book commences, and covers in startling imagery the work of the past 25 years.
