THE GIRL by Natsumi Hayashi

Title: THE GIRL
Subtitle: Thoughtographs: A Dialogue with AI
Blurb:
《THE GIRL》is a series of “thoughtographs” created through Natsumi Hayashi’s dialogue with AI.
By repeatedly casting words toward the AI, fragments of the artist’s unconscious emerge by chance.
Hayashi regards this process as a contemporary continuation of Surrealist automatism. For her, AI functions as a “transparent camera”: a device for self-portraiture that reveals the self more deeply precisely because it does not take photographs.
The girls who appear often hide their faces behind their hair or other elements.
They do not exist to be seen; rather, they invite the viewer’s projection.
Their anonymity is not a lack, but a space in which viewers can mirror themselves.
Within this space, Hayashi finds both freedom from the gaze and an affirmation of existence.
《THE GIRL》gently traverses the boundaries between dream and reality, self and other, photography and AI — a twenty-first-century exploration of the self-portrait.
